The Almost Useful Machines

Visual Sound

In this week, we are learning how to create useless machines, with the difficulty that when you design, you are always looking for functionability. It´s about thinking in the rules, the functions you want to add to the machine and the steps to make that happen.

In this case, we went for brainstorming for a while, rather than prototyping from the beginning, thinking in what do we want it to do, instead of how are we going to make it do so. During this week actually we will also learn to document, and that part it´s going to be a really big part of the class, that´s why we are going to have almost a full day for documentation. Sometimes is hard, because we are more worried always about the doing part and the results, so we usually forget the process of getting there.

The work during the week was very interesting because we had a lot of rush to make it real in only 3 ½ days, but it had a lot of coding, electronics, prototyping and digital fabrication. We worked as a group taking all the decisions together since we started with the first ideas and we also shared ideas with the other classmates, exchanging different approaches to others machines, by trying to define their concept into something that could eb fabricated.

Our concept since the beginning was called “Visual Sound” and decided to create a machine that visualizes sound in some way. We viewed some references, shared some ideas, and started drawing and prototyping.
